Crochet Large Coaster

My crochet large coaster design will protect your tables from scratches, it is a pretty pattern that can crochet up easily and quickly, I have used yarn, but it can also be made in cotton as long as the same weight and hook size are used.

Shell Group.  (2tr, 1ch, 2tr)

Base of ch. Work into first stitch

3ch counts as first tr

Approx finished size:  5.5 Inch Diameter

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn I have used for 6 coasters approx:-
30 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in each of the colours 1 & 2

4.00mm Clover crochet hook

TENSION – 5tr and 3 pattern rows measures approx 1 Inch

Made in rounds without turning throughout.

With Colour 1 make magic circle, (abbrev) Make 3ch, (RS) work 13tr into ring, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. (13tr + 3ch)

Round 2 – 1ch, 2dc into base of 1ch, 2dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc on beginning of round. Fasten off. (28dc)

Join in colour 2

Round 3 – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc on beginning of round. (28dc)

Round 4 – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last dc, make 2ch, miss dc, ss to first dc on beginning of round. (14, 2ch spaces)

Round 5 – ss into first 2ch space, make 3ch, work 2tr into same 2ch space, * 1ch, miss dc, 3tr into next 2ch space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, make 1ch, miss dc, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of round. Fasten off. (14, 3tr groups)

Round 6 – Join colour 1 to any 1ch space, 1ch, 1dc into same 1ch space, * make 4ch, miss 3tr, 1dc into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr, make 4ch, miss 3tr, ss to first dc on beginning of round. (14, 4ch spaces)

Round 7 – ss into first 4ch space, make 3ch, work (1tr, 1ch, 2tr) into same 4ch space, * 1ch, miss dc, work (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next 4ch space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, make 1ch, miss dc, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of round. Fasten off. (14, shell groups)

Round 8 – Join in colour 2 to any 1ch space between shell groups, work 1ch, 1dc into same space, * miss 2tr, work (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) into 1ch space on next shell group, miss 2tr, 1dc into next 1ch space, *  rpt from * to last shell group, work (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) into 1ch space on shell group, miss 2tr, ss to first dc on beginning of round. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn.

Yes, that's a great idea Janice, you could also use a larger hook and thicker yarn.
