Crochet Puff Stitch Cardigan uk

I have designed this crochet puff stitch cardigan uk to fit a 12 – 18 month baby. You could give as a lovely gift to a family member or a friends baby, make it for Christmas, birthday’s etc.

Made in double knitting yarn on a 4.50mm hook, this is an easy and quick to crochet pattern.

yrh, pull up loop from next st, (twice) yrh pull through 4 loops, yrh pull through 2 loops.

tr2tog Decrease.   Leaving last loop of each tr on hook, work 1tr into each of next 2tr, yrh, pull through all loops.

ps Decrease.  yrh, pull up loop from next st, yrh, pull up loop from next st, yrh pull through 4 loops, yrh pull through 2 loops.

Dec 1dc.  Pull up loop from next 2st, yrh, pull though all loops.

fptr.    Work tr around front post of the tr on row below
bptr.   Work tr around back post of the tr on row below

Base of ch. Work into first stitch

3ch counts as first tr

Size to fit approx – 20 Inch chest, 12 – 18 month baby
Finished length from shoulder approx 11.5 Inches.
Sleeve length: From under arm to cuff approx 7 Inches

Materials
I have used:-
40 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in colour 1
40 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in colour 2
80 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in colour 3
5 medium size buttons

5.00mm & 4.50mm Clover Crochet Hook

TENSION – 4tr & 2 rows measures approx 1 inch

Back – Starting with rib, using colour 1 and 4.50mm hook make 44ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (41tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch, * 1fptr around next tr, 1bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of turning ch. Turn. (see abbrev for fptr & bptr)

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

Pattern Row 1 – Join in colour 2, (RS) make 3ch, 1tr into each st to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Fasten off. Turn.

Pattern Row 2 – Join in colour 3, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (42dc)

Pattern Row 3 – 3ch, 1ps (see abbrev) into each dc to last dc, 1tr into dc. Turn. (40ps, 1tr + 3ch)

Pattern Row 4 – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each ps to end, 1dc into top of 3ch.

Fasten off. Turn. (42dc)

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 six more times.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once.

You should have 29 rows worked from rib or your work measures
approx 11.5 inches from beginning. Fasten off.

First Front – # (Rib) With 4.50mm hook and colour 1, make 22ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (19tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch, * 1fptr around next tr, 1bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of turning ch. Turn.

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 from back four more times.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. (19tr + 3ch)

21 rows have been worked in all from rib. Fasten off. Turn. #

Shape Neck – Miss 5tr, join in colour 3 to next tr, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (15dc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) 3ch, 1ps into each of next 11dc, dec 1ps (see abbrev) over next 2dc, 1tr into last dc. Turn. (12ps, 1tr + 3ch)

Next Row – (Dec Row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, dec 1dc (see —- abbrev) over next 2ps, 1dc into each ps to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Fasten off. Turn. (13dc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) Join in colour 2 make 3ch, 1tr into each of next 9dc, tr2tog (see abbrev) over next 2dc, 1tr into last dc. Turn. (11tr + 3ch)

Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 2 to 4 once.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. Fasten off.

Second Front – Rpt from # to # on first front.

Shape Neck – Join in colour 3, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next
14tr turn leaving 4tr & 3ch un-worked. Turn.

Next Row – (Dec) 3ch, dec 1ps over next 2st, 1ps into each of next 11dc, 1tr into last
dc. Turn. (12ps, 1tr + 3ch)

Next Row – (Dec Row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 10st, dec 1dc over next 2st, 1dc into top of 3ch. Fasten off. Turn. (13dc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) Join in colour 2 make 3ch, tr2tog over next 2dc, 1tr into each of next 10dc. Turn. (11tr + 3ch)

Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 2 to 4 once.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – (Rib) With 4.50mm hook and colour 1, make 30ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (27tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch * 1fptr around next tr, 1bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (27tr + 3ch)

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

1st Pattern Row – (Inc Row) Join in colour 2, 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, 1tr into each st to end, 2tr into last st. Fasten off. Turn. (29tr + 3ch)

2nd Pattern Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. (30dc)

3rd Pattern Row – (Inc Row) 3ch, 1ps into base of 3ch, 1ps into each dc to last dc, (1ps, 1tr) into dc. Turn. (30ps, 1tr + 3ch)

4th Pattern Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each ps to end, 1dc into top of 3ch.

Rpt 1st to 4th Pattern Rows increasing in the same way on the beginning and end of alternate rows until 42st remain.

Continue in pattern as set without further shaping until sleeve seam measures approx 7 inches from beginning, ending on a 4th Pattern Row. Fasten off.

Join shoulder seams.

Right and Left Front Borders
With RS facing and 5.00mm hook, join colour 1 to lower edge of right front edge, make
1ch, work 40dc evenly into row ends up front edge to neck, 3dc into corner, work 14dc evenly along first neck edge to shoulder, 1dc into each of next 18dc across back, 14dc evenly along second neck edge, 3dc into corner, work 40dc evenly into row ends down second front edge. Turn.

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1 more row in dc all around cardigan working 3dc into corners. Turn.

Next Row – # 3ch, 1tr into each dc to corner. Turn.

Next Row – 3ch, * 1fptr around next tr, 1bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of turning ch. Fasten off. #

With RS facing and working from neck downwards, return to opposite front and rpt from # to # Fasten off.

Finishing – Fold sleeves in half lengthways, place centre to shoulder seams and sew into position, sew up side and sleeve seams. (see pic)

Turn through to the RS, sew in and tie off loose ends of yarn.

Sew on buttons evenly down side for boy or girl and use gaps in tr’s as buttonholes.
