It’s made in a variegated yarn to give it some style with double and single crochet stitches, there is no need for any sewing up as it is worked in one piece from the neck down.

Easy Peasy Baby Cardigan                      CNC30

Abbreviations
WS.    Wrong Side

RS.     Right Side
ch.     Chain
sc.      Single Crochet

Dec.  Decrease
Pull up a loop from each of next 2sc, yo and pull through all loops.

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

ch3 counts as first dc

Size to fit: 16 inch chest, 0-3 month baby

Finished length from shoulder approx 10.5 Inches
Sleeve seam length approx 5 Inches

Materials
I have used:-
110 grams of James C Brett Marble DK

OR an equivalent yarn i.e
3.90oz of Variegated Worsted Weight #3

4.00mm crochet hook, 3 decorative buttons

GAUGE – 4dc & 2.5 rows measures approx 1 inch

Worked in one piece, starting with yoke

ch58, (RS) 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in the next 6ch’s (Front), 3dc in next ch, 1dc in next 9ch’s (Shoulder), 3dc in next ch, 1dc in the next 18ch’s (Back), 3dc in next ch, 1dc in the next 9ch’s. (Shoulder), 3dc in next ch, 1dc in the next 8ch (Front). Turn. (63dc + ch3).

2nd Row – (Inc Row) ch3, * 1dc in each dc to next 3dc group, 1dc in next dc, 3dc in centre dc of 3dc group, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, 1dc in next dc, 3dc in centre dc of 3dc group, 1dc in each dc to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (71dc + ch3)

3rd to 8th Row – rpt 2nd Row. Turn. (119dc + ch3)

9th Row – (Divide for Armholes) – ch3, 1dc in next 15dc, * 2dc, ch1 in next dc, skip next 25dc, 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of next 34dc, 2dc, ch1 in next dc, skip next 25dc, 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each dc to end, 1dc in top of ch3, Turn. (73dc, 2, ch1 spaces + ch3)

10th Row – ch3, 1dc in each dc to first ch1 space, 2dc in ch1 space, 1dc in each dc to second ch1 space, 2dc in ch1 space, 1dc in each dc to end. Turn. (77dc + ch3)

11th Row – ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn.

Rpt 11th Row until 21 rows have been worked in all from beginning or work measures approx 10 Inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – Join yarn to side of dc underarm, ch3, 1dc in each of next 25dc, 1dc in side of dc on opposite side of sleeve, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn. (26dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt last row until 9 rows have been worked in all from yoke. Turn.

Cuff – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to end, sl st to first sc. Turn.

Next Row – (Decrease Row) – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of the next 2sc, * dec 1sc (see abbrev) over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 3sc, * rpt from * to * to last 4sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. (22sc)

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 2 rows of 1sc in each sc, turning and sl st to first sc on the end of each row. Turn.

Button/Buttonhole Bands
Written for a girl, swap buttonhole row to opposite side for a boy

With WS facing and starting at neck edge on right hand front, work 42sc evenly in row ends down first front edge, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each dc along bottom of cardigan, 3sc in corner, work 42sc evenly in row ends up second front edge to neck. Turn.

Buttonhole Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of the sc down front edge, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc along bottom of cardigan, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each of next 26sc, * ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in next 7sc, * rpt from * to * once more, ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in last sc. Turn. (3 Buttonholes)

Next row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each ch2 space and sc down front edge to corner. Fasten off.

With WS facing join yarn to bottom edge on left hand side, working from lower edge up, work 1sc in each sc to corner. Fasten off.

Collar – (Optional) Rejoin yarn to first ch after buttonhole band on WR side of work, ch3, 1dc in each of next 7ch, 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 18ch, 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn.

Rpt 2nd Row three more times. Fasten off.

Finishing – Close small gap underarms, weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn, sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. If you have added the collar, fold it back on to cardigan.
