Popcorn Baby Coat

Sweet popcorn baby coat, it can be made for either a boy or girl, made from the neck downwards in one piece this little coat it is easy and quick to make, I have adorned it with teddy bear buttons and a bear applique.

It has been designed to fit a 3-6 month baby, hope you enjoy!

Work 5dc in next dc, drop loop from hook, inset hook from front to back in the first dc of the 5dc of group, pick up and pull dropped loop through stitch.

Dec.    Decrease
Pull up a loop from each of next 2sc, yo, pull through all loops.

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

ch3 counts as first dc

Size to fit: 18 Inch chest, 3-6 month baby
Finished length from shoulder approx 10.5 Inches
Underarm sleeve length approx 5 Inches

Materials
I have used:-
100 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in color 1
30 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in color 2

OR an equivalent yarn would be:-
3.5oz of Worsted Weight #3 in color 1
1.05oz of Worsted Weight #3 in color 2

3.50mm Clover crochet hook, 6 buttons

GAUGE – 5dc & 3 rows measures approx 1 inch

Start with yoke – Using color 1, ch60, (RS) 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in next 7ch, (Front) 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, (shoulder) 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 18ch, (Back) 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch, (shoulder) 3dc in next ch, 1dc in each of next 9ch. (Front) Turn (65dc + ch3)

Row 2 – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * 1sc in each dc to next 3dc group, 1sc in next dc, 3sc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, 1sc in next dc, 3sc in next dc, 1sc in each dc to end, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn (74sc)

Row 3 – Working in back loop of stitch only, ch3, * 1dc in each sc to next 3sc group, 1dc in next sc, 3dc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 3sc group, 1dc in next sc, 3dc in next sc, 1dc in each sc to end. Turn. (81dc + ch3)

Row 4 – Working through both loops of stitch, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * 1sc in each dc to next 3dc group, 1sc in next dc, 3sc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, 1sc in next dc, 3sc in next dc, 1sc in each dc to end, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn (90sc)

Rpt Rows 3 & 4 until you have 154sc in total.

Next Row – (Increase and divide for armholes) Working in back loop of stitch only ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next 21sc, skip 33sc, 2sc in next sc, 1sc in next 20sc, 2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 21sc, 2sc in next sc, skip 33sc, 1sc in each of next 22sc. Turn. (91sc)

Commence Skirt – Working through both loops of stitch from now on.

Next Row – ch3, * 1dc in next 5sc, ch1, skip 1sc, * rpt from * to * to last 6sc, 1dc in each of last 6sc. Fasten off. Turn. (15, 5dc blocks, 1dc + ch3)

Pattern Row 1 – Join in color 2, ch3, * 1dc in next 2dc, popcorn in next dc (see abbrev), 1dc in next 2dc, ch1, skip ch1 space, * rpt from * to * to last 5dc and ch3, 1dc in next 2dc, popcorn in next dc, 1dc in next 2dc, 1dc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn. (15, popcorn)

Pattern Row 2 – Join in color 1, ch3, * 1dc in next 5st, ch1, skip ch1 space, * rpt from * to * to last 5st and ch3, 1dc in each of last 5st, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (15, 5dc blocks, 1dc + ch3).

Pattern Row 3 – ch3, 1dc in next dc, * ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next dc, ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next dc, ch1, skip ch1 space, 1dc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 4dc and ch3, (ch1, skip next dc, 1dc in next dc) rpt once, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (46dc, 44, ch1 space + ch3)

Pattern Row 4 – ch3, * 1dc in next 5st, ch1, skip ch1 space, * rpt from * to * to last 5st and ch3, 1dc in each of last 5st, 1dc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 once. Turn.
Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 3. Turn.

Bottom & Front Edging
With WS facing continue with color 1, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc and ch1 space to last ch3 to turn with, 3sc in top of ch3, working along left hand side of front edge, work 42sc evenly up front to neck, 3sc in corner, working in opposite side of starting ch work 1sc in each ch around neck to next corner, 3sc in corner, 42sc evenly down second front edge, 1sc in corner, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn.

Next Row (Buttonholes) – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 2sc, * ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in each of next 7sc, * rpt from * to * 4 more times, ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in next sc, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc around neck, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc down front edge, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc along bottom edge to end, 1sc in corner, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (6 buttonholes made)

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work one more row of 1sc in each sc and ch2 space all round coat to end, working 3sc in each of the corners, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – Working in the back loop of stitch only and with RS facing, join color 1 to first sc, ch1, 1sc in same st, 1sc in each of next 32sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (33sc)

Next Row – Working through both loops ch3, 1dc in next sc, * ch1, skip 1sc, 1dc in each of next 5sc * rpt from * to * to last sc, ch1, skip 1sc, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (5, 5dc blocks)

Row 1 – Join in color 2, ch4, skip the ch1 space * 1dc in next 2dc, popcorn in next dc, 1dc in next 2dc, ch1, skip ch1 space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, 1dc in dc, sl st to 3rd of ch4 on beginning of row.
Fasten off. Turn. (5, popcorn)

Row 2 – Join in color 1, ch3, 1dc in next dc, * ch1, skip ch1 space, 1dc in next 5st, * rpt from * to * to end, ch1, skip ch1 space, sl st in top of ch3. Turn. (5, 5dc blocks, 1dc + ch3)

Row 3 – ch4, skip ch1 space, 1dc in next dc, * ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next dc, ch1, skip 1dc, 1dc in next dc, ch1, skip ch1 space, 1dc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to end sl st to 3rd of ch4 on beginning of row. Turn. (16dc, 16, ch1 spaces + ch3)

Row 4 – ch3, 1dc in next dc, * ch1, skip ch1, 1dc in each of next 5st * rpt from * to * to last ch1 space, ch1, skip ch1, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (5, 5dc blocks)

Rpt Rows 1 to 4 once. Turn.
Rpt Row 1. Fasten off. Turn.

Cuff – Join in color 1, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each st to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (33sc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next sc, * dec (see abbrev) 1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc, * rpt from * to * to last 3sc, dec 1sc over next 2sc, 1sc in last sc, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn. (25sc)

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 1sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
