A sweet popcorn baby coat uk format, that can be made for either a boy or girl, made from the neck downwards in one piece this little coat is easy and quick to make.

It has been designed to fit a 3-6 month baby, hope you enjoy!

Popcorn Stitch     (see pictorial here)
Work 5tr into next tr, drop loop from hook, inset hook from front to back into the first tr of the 5tr of group, pick up and pull dropped loop through stitch.

Dec.    Decrease
Pull up a loop from each of next 2dc, yrh, pull through all loops.

Base of ch. Work into first stitch

3ch counts as first tr

Size to fit: 18 Inch chest, 3-6 month baby
Finished length from shoulder approx 10.5 Inches
Underarm Sleeve length approx 5 Inches

Materials
I have used:-
100 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in colour 1
30 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in colour 2

3.50mm crochet hook, 6 buttons

TENSION – 5tr & 3 rows measures approx 1 inch

Start with yoke – Using colour 1, make 60ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into next 7ch, (Front) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 9ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 18ch, (Back) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 9ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 9ch. (Front) Turn (65tr + 3ch)

Row 2 – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * 1dc into each tr to next 3tr group, 1dc into next tr, 3dc into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1dc into next tr, 3dc into next tr, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn (74dc)

Row 3 – Working into back loop of stitch only, make 3ch, * 1tr into each dc to next 3dc group, 1tr into next dc, 3tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, 1tr into next dc, 3tr into next dc, 1tr into each dc to end. Turn. (81tr + 3ch)

Row 4 – Working through both loops of stitch, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * 1dc into each tr to next 3tr group, 1dc into next tr, 3dc into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1dc into next tr, 3dc into next tr, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn (90dc)

Rpt Rows 3 & 4 until you have 154dc in total.

Next Row – (Increase and divide for armholes) Working into back loop of stitch only make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next 21dc, miss 33dc, 2dc into next dc, 1dc into next 20dc, 2dc into next dc, 1dc into each of next 21dc, 2dc into next dc, miss 33dc, 1dc into each of next 22dc. Turn. (91dc)

Commence Skirt – Working through both loops of stitch from now on.

Next Row – 3ch, * 1tr into next 5dc, 1ch, miss 1dc, * rpt from * to * to last 6dc, 1tr into each of last 6dc. Fasten off. Turn. (15, 5tr blocks, 1tr + 3ch)

Pattern Row 1 – Join in colour 2, make 3ch, * 1tr into next 2tr, popcorn into next tr (see abbrev), 1tr into next 2tr, 1ch, miss 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last 5tr and 3ch, 1tr into next 2tr, popcorn into next tr, 1tr into next 2tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Fasten off. Turn. (15, popcorn)

Pattern Row 2 – Join in colour 1, make 3ch, * 1tr into next 5st, 1ch, miss 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last 5st and 3ch, 1tr into each of last 5st, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (15, 5tr blocks, 1tr + 3ch).

Pattern Row 3 – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 1ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1ch, miss 1ch space, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last 4tr and 3ch, (1ch, miss next tr, 1tr into next tr) rpt once, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (46tr, 44, 1ch space + 3ch)

Pattern Row 4 – 3ch, * 1tr into next 5st, 1ch, miss 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last 5st and 3ch, 1tr into each of last 5st, 1tr into top of 3ch. Fasten off. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 once. Turn.
Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 3. Turn.

Bottom & Front Edging
With WS facing continue with colour 1, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr and 1ch space to last 3ch to turn with, 3dc into top of 3ch, working along left hand side of front edge, work 42dc evenly up front to neck, 3dc into corner, working into opposite side of starting ch work 1dc into each ch around neck to next corner, 3dc into corner, 42dc evenly down second front edge, 1dc into corner, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn.

Next Row (Buttonholes) – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 2dc, * 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 7dc, * rpt from * to * 4 more times, 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into next dc, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc around neck, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc down front edge, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc along bottom edge to end, 1dc into corner, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (6 buttonholes made)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work one more row of 1dc into each dc and 2ch space all round coat to end, working 3dc into each of the corners, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Sleeves X 2 – Working into the back loop of stitch only and with RS facing, join colour 1 to first dc, 1ch, 1dc into same st, 1dc into each of next 32dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (33dc)

Next Row – Working through both loops make 3ch, 1tr into next dc, * 1ch, miss 1dc, 1tr into each of next 5dc * rpt from * to * to last dc, make 1ch, miss 1dc, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (5, 5tr blocks)

Row 1 – Join in colour 2, make 4ch, miss 1ch space * 1tr into next 2tr, popcorn into next tr, 1tr into next 2tr, 1ch, miss 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last tr, 1tr into tr, ss to 3rd of 4ch on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (5, popcorn)

Row 2 – Join in colour 1, make 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 1ch, miss 1ch space, 1tr into next 5st, * rpt from * to * to end, 1ch, miss 1ch space, ss into top of 3ch. Turn. (5, 5tr blocks, 1tr + 3ch)

Row 3 – 4ch, miss 1ch space, 1tr into next tr, * 1ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1ch, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1ch, miss 1ch space, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end ss to 3rd of 4ch on beginning of row. Turn. (16tr, 16, 1ch spaces + 3ch)

Row 4 – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 1ch, miss 1ch, 1tr into each of next 5st * rpt from * to * to last 1ch space, make 1ch, miss 1ch, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (5, 5tr blocks)

Rpt Rows 1 to 4 once. Turn.
Rpt Row 1. Fasten off. Turn.

Cuff – Join in colour 1, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each st to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (33dc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next dc, * dec (see abbrev) 1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 2dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into last dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (25dc)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
