The tension-gauge of your work is important as it can change how your item looks and the finished size.
All people crochet differently so it is always best to check the tension-gauge with a swatch before you begin your project.

Always measure your work so that it will match as close as possible to the pattern.
For my test above I have used a 4.00mm hook and and a light worsted yarn (double knitting for UK users), as you can see in this example is 4 stitches and 2 rows to the inch.
