Closed Shell Stitch Tutorial – See the written instructions on how to crochet the beautiful stitch below.

It can be used with acrylic or cotton yarns and is ideal for blankets, placemats, dishcloths etc.

Looks great on both sides as there is no right or wrong way to show this lovely stitch, I have shown it in a two colour stripe and a solid colour.

ch.       Chain
dc.       Double Crochet
tr.        Treble Crochet
rpt.      Repeat

tch.      Turning Chain

Shell.  (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into same stitch or space.

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

3ch counts as first tr

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Made in multiples of 4 + 3

I made 43ch, work (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into 5th ch from hook, * miss 3ch, work (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next ch, * rpt from * to * to last 2ch, miss 1ch, 1tr into last ch. Turn.

2nd Row – 1ch 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, * miss 2tr, (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next 1ch space, miss 2tr, 1dc into space between next two shells, * (see pic) rpt from * to * to last shell and tch, miss 2tr, (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next 1ch space, miss 2tr, 1dc into top of tch. Turn.

WIP

3rd Row – 3ch, work (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into each 1ch space of shells to last dc, 1tr into dc. Turn.

4th Row – 1ch 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, * miss 2tr, (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next 1ch space, miss 2tr, 1dc into space between next two shells, * rpt from * to * to last shell and 3tch, miss 2tr, (2tr, 1ch, 2tr) into next 1ch space, miss 2tr, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt 3rd & 4th Rows until required length, if you wish to you can change colours after the even rows.
