Crochet Crinkle Cowl-Beanie – This lovely beanie hat and cowl set has been written with chilly winter days in mind, it’s super fun to create and great for a gift.

This twosome is crocheted in perfect harmony with each other, made in a worsted weight (aran) yarn for warmth, using the crinkly stitch.

The set consisting of a beautiful two button cowl and a co-ordinating hat which has a turn up brim.

For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, I have used approximately:-

200 grams of King Cole Comfort Aran

6.00mm crochet hook, 2 medium size buttons.

TENSION – 4dc & 4 rows of dc measures approx 1 inch

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Cowl – Make 28ch loosely, working into back bump of ch, (see pic) work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, (RS) 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (27dc)

2nd Row – 1ch, 1dc into stitch at the base of 1ch, * 1tr into next dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * to end. Turn.

3rd Row – 1ch, 1dc into stitch at the base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr and dc to end. Turn.

Rpt 2nd & 3rd Rows until you have worked 99 rows in all or work measures approx 27.5 inches from beginning of work, you can add more rows here if you want for a longer cowl. Turn.

Work 2nd Row once. Turn.

Buttonhole Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into of next 4st, * make 3ch, miss 2st, * 1dc into each of next 13st, make 3ch, miss 2st, 1dc into each of last 5st. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of 1ch, * 1tr into next dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * over next 2dc, work 1tr, 1dc into 3ch space, rpt from * to * over next 12dc, work 1tr into next st, work 1dc, 1tr into next 3ch space, 1dc into next st, rpt from * to * over the last 5dc. Turn. (27st)

Rpt 3rd Row

Rpt 2nd & 3rd Rows once. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn, attach buttons to correspond with buttonholes, fold neck edge to make a collar.

Beanie – The 8 BLO dc’s at the end of the 2nd Rows and beginning of 3rd Rows are the brim.

Make 42ch, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, (RS) 1dc into each dc to end. Turn (41st)

2nd Row – 1ch, 1dc into stitch at the base of 1ch, * 1tr into next dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 8dc, working into BLO work 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

3rd Row – Working into BLO make 1ch, work 1dc into stitch at the base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 7dc, working through both loops work 1dc into each dc and tr to last dc, work 1dc into dc. Turn.

Rpt 2nd & 3rd Rows until you have worked 67 rows in all or your work measures approx 18 inches, you can add more rows here if you wish to make the beanie wider.

Fold work in half widthways and slip stitch the last row you just worked and the starting chain edge together to make a round. Fasten off.

Join yarn so you are working into row ends. (opposite end to the brim)

Top – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1 row end, 1dc into next row end, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off leaving a long length of yarn to gather the top. (34dc)

Finishing – Weave loose length of yarn through the row of dc’s evenly to end and pull to gather tightly, secure the yarn so it does not break free.

Pom-Pom (optional) I used Clover pom-pom maker number 85. Attach pom-pom to crown on beanie.
