Crochet Ridged Winter Set

Crochet Ridged Winter Set – A two piece warm hat and buttoned cowl set, crocheted in simple back loop single crochet rib stitch, I have made this free crochet pattern in a worsted weight #4 (aran for UK) yarn on a 5.50mm hook size, you can easily add more chains and rows to make the set larger if you wish.

Cowl:     8 x 29 Inches

Hat:       12 x 9 Inches

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, I have used approximately:-

200 grams of King Cole Comfort Aran 

5.50mm crochet hook, 2 large buttons

TENSION – 4dc & 4 rows measures approx 1 inch

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Working through BLO throughout for both the cowl and the hat.

Make 32ch, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (31dc)

2nd Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Rpt 2nd Row until you have worked 119 rows in all or work measures approx 27.5 inches, you can add more rows here if you want for a wider cowl. Turn.

Buttonhole Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into of next 4dc, * make 3ch, miss 2dc, * 1dc into each of next 17dc, make 3ch, miss 2dc, 1dc into each of last 5dc. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 4dc, 2dc into 3ch space, 1dc into each of next 17dc, 2dc into 3ch space, 1dc into each of last 5dc. Turn. (31dc)

Rpt 2nd Row three more times.

Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn, attach buttons to correspond with buttonholes, fold neck edge to make a collar. 

Ridge Hat – Make 47ch, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn (46dc)

2nd Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Rpt 2nd Row until you have worked 72 rows in all or your work measures approx 16.5 inches, you can add more rows here if you wish to make the hat bigger.

Fold work in half widthways and slip stitch the last row you just worked and the starting chain edge together to make a round. Do not Fasten off.

Turn your work onto the side so you are working in row ends.

Top – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1 row end, 1dc into next row end, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. (36dc)

Fasten off leaving a long length of yarn to gather the top.

Finishing – Weave loose length of yarn through the row of dc’s evenly to end and pull to gather tightly, secure the yarn so it does not break free.

Wear with or without a brim.
