Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, I have used approximately:-

110 grams of King Cole Big Value Baby DK yarn
Small amounts of King Cole Big Value Baby DK yarn in colours 2, 3 & 4 (snail)

5.00mm crochet hook, 5 medium buttons
Use lower hook sizes to make the jacket smaller

TENSION –  4tr & 2 rows measures approx 1 inch

Worked in one piece, starting with yoke.

Make 55ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into the next 6ch (front), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into next 8ch (shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 17ch (back), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch. (shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch (front). Turn. (60tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – (Inc Row) Make 3ch, * 1tr into each tr to next 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (68tr + 3ch)

Rpt 2nd Row. until 7 rows have been worked in all. Turn. (108tr + 3ch)

Divide for Armholes – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 19tr, make 1ch, miss 28tr, (first armhole) 1dc into each of next 39tr, make 1ch, miss 28tr, (second armhole) 1dc into each of next 19tr, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (79dc + 2, 1ch spaces)

Commence Skirt – Make 3ch, miss 1dc, 1clv (see abbrev) into next dc, * miss 2dc, 1clv into next dc, * rpt from * to * to next 1ch space, 1clv into space, rpt from * to * 12 more times, miss 3dc, 1clv into 1ch space, rpt from * to * to last 2dc, miss 1dc, 1tr into last dc. Turn. (26clv)

Pattern Row – 3ch, 1clv into each 1ch space to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Row until 10 rows have been worked in all from yoke. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – With RS facing join yarn to side of dc underarm, make 3ch, 1tr into each of next 28tr, 1tr into side of dc on opposite side of sleeve, sl st to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (29tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, sl st to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt last row until 8 rows have been worked in all from yoke. Turn.

Cuff – 3ch, work (1tr, 1ch, 1tr2tog) into base of 3ch, * miss 2tr, clv into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr, miss 2tr, sl st to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Fasten off (10clv)

Button/Buttonhole Bands – With RS facing and starting at lower edge on right hand side of coat, work 37dc evenly into row ends up first front edge, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each stitch around neck edge, 3dc into corner, work 37dc into row ends down second front edge to end. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 37dc. Turn.

Rpt last row once. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band – Return to neck edge on first front edge, working from neck downwards make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 7dc, * rpt from * to * three more times, make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of the remaining dc. Turn. (5 Buttonholes)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc and 2ch space to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Close small gap under arms, weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn, attach buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

To make the jacket for a size 3-6 month use a 4.50mm hook, 0-3 month use a 4.00mm hook.

Snail Motif – With colour 2 make a magic circle, hook make 3ch, work 17tr into circle, pull loose thread to close circle, ss to top of 3ch. (17tr +3ch)

Second Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc. Turn. Fasten off. (18dc) Turn.

Third Row – With colour 3 yarn, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 7dc. Turn.

Fourth Row – Make 4ch, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each of next 2ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Fasten off. Turn.

Head – Using colour 3 work (3ch, 2tr, 2dtr) into the dc on the second row (see pictures 1 & 2), ss to first dc on fourth row. Turn.

Eye – With colour 4 make 2ch, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, fasten off leaving a small length of thread, use thread to gather around top of dc and make into an eye.

Finishing – Sew in and tie off loose ends of yarn, attach eye to centre of head.
