I have crocheted this lovely mat in a light worsted #3 variegated (random double knitting for UK users) yarn with a 4.50mm crochet hook size, but you could use solid colours which would look good too.

Materials

For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, you will need approximately:-
100 grams of King Cole Melody DK yarn

4.50mm crochet hook

TENSION – 5tr & 2 rows measures approx 1 inch

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Made in multiples of 3 + 2

Make 83ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each ch to end. Turn. (80tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * make 2ch, miss 2tr, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

3rd Row – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into 2ch space, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

4th & 5th Rows – Rpt 2nd Row & 3rd Rows.

6th Row – 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (81dc)

7th Row – 3ch, 1tr into next dc, * miss 2dc, work 3tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 4dc, miss 2dc, 1tr into each of last 2dc. Turn. (25, 3tr groups)

8th Row – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, miss 1tr, 1 vst (see abbrev) into centre tr of 3tr, * miss 2tr, 1vst into centre tr of next 3tr, * rpt from * to * to end, miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (25 vst)

9th Row – 3ch, 1tr into next tr, work 3tr into each 2ch space to end miss 1tr, 1tr into next tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt 8th & 9th Rows seven more times until 23 rows have been worked in all. Turn.

24th Row – 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into next tr, 1dc into space between next 3tr group, (see pic) 1dc into each tr to end. Turn.

26th to 29th Rows – Rpt 2nd Row & 3rd Rows twice. Turn.

Border – 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, 3dc into top of 3ch, work 54dc evenly into row ends down first side of mat, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each ch along starting chain edge, 3dc into corner, work 54dc evenly into row ends evenly up second side of mat, 1dc into corner, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn.

Second Row – 6ch, 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into each of next 2ch, * miss 3dc, 1tr into next dc, make 3ch, work 3tr around the post of the tr, (see pic) * rpt from * to * around mat to end, ss to 3rd of 6ch. Fasten off.

Note – You may have to miss one more dc or one less dc on the corners to get it even.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn.
