Round yoke baby coat, a delightful free crochet pattern for a baby cardigan which is quick to make, ideal for everyday use or to give as a gift.

Made from the neck downwards in one piece, you can use three colours or just one, the choice is yours.

Pattern is written for a light worsted #3 (double knitting) yarn with a three button fastening.

Pattern asks for a 4.00mm crochet hook, you are welcome to use other hook sizes and thicker yarn if you want to make the outfit a different size.

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Start with yoke (worked in one piece) – Using main colour yarn, make 55ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end. Turn. (52tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into each of next 2tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to last 4tr, work 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of next 3tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (62tr + 3ch)

3rd Row – 3ch, 1tr in each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (62tr + 3ch)

4th Row – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into each of next 2tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next 3tr, * rpt from * to * to end, working last tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (77tr + 3ch)

5th Row – as 3rd Row.

6th Row – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next  2tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (102tr + 3ch)

7th Row – as 3rd Row.

8th Row – (Increase) as 6th Row until 1tr and 3ch remain, 2tr into tr, 1tr into top of 3ch. (136tr + 3ch)

Commence with Skirt – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1tr, 1 shell (see abbrev above) into next tr, miss 1tr, 1dc  into next tr, rpt from * to *  to last 3tr and 3ch, miss 1tr, 1 shell into next tr,  miss 1tr, 1dc into top of 3ch. (34 shell groups). Turn.

Fasten off. Join in colour 2.

Second Row – 3ch, * 1vst (see abbrev) into 1ch space of shell, 1tr into dc, * rpt from * to * to last shell and dc, 1vst into shell, 1tr into dc. Turn.
  
Third Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * 1 shell into vst, 1dc into tr, * rpt from * to * to last vst and 3ch, 1 shell into vst, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. Fasten off.

Fourth Row – (Divide for armholes) Join in colour 1, make 3ch, * 1vst into 1ch space of shell, 1tr into dc, * rpt from * to * (3 more times), 1vst into 1ch space of next shell,  2tr 1ch into dc, miss 7 shell groups, 2tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * (9 more times), 1vst into 1ch space of next  shell,  2tr, 1ch into dc, miss 7 shell groups, 2tr into next dc, *  rpt from * to * (4 more times), 1vst into 1ch space of shell, 1tr into dc. Turn.

Fifth Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * 1 shell into vst, 1dc into tr * rpt  from * to * (4 times more), miss 1tr, 1 shell into 1ch space underarm between tr’s, miss 1tr, 1dc  into next tr, rpt from * to * (10 times more), miss 1tr, 1 shell into 1ch space underarm  between tr’s, miss 1tr, 1dc into next tr, rpt from * to * to last vst and 3ch, 1 shell  into vst 1dc into top of 3ch. Sixth & Seventh Rows – Join in colour 3, rpt Second & Third Rows. Fasten off.

Rpt Second and Third Rows alternating the three colours until 8 shell rows in all have been worked from yoke or work measures approx 10 Inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

With colour 1, make 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of 1ch, 1dc into next 2tr, * make 2ch, 1dc into each of next 5st, * rpt * to * to last 3st, make 2ch, work 1dc into each of next 3st. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – Using colour 1 with WS facing, rejoin yarn into same dc you have already worked 2tr & 1ch into at the base of armhole, make 3ch, * 1vst into next shell group, 1tr into dc, * rpt from * to * (5 times more), 1vst into shell, 1tr into same dc as 2tr at base of armhole, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (7vst)

Row 2 – 1ch, 1dc into first tr, * 1 shell into vst, 1dc into tr, * rpt from * to * to last vst, 1 shell into vst, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.

Rpt Second and Third Rows from skirt alternating the three colours three more times, slip stitching to the beginning and turning at the end of each row until 5 shell rows have been worked in all from yoke or sleeve seam measures approx 3.5 inches under arm. Fasten off.

Cuff – Join colour 1, make 2ch, * miss 1tr, 1dc into  next (tr, 1ch space, tr) miss 1tr, 1htr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last  shell,  miss 1tr, 1dc into next (tr, 1ch space, tr) miss 1tr, ss to top of 2ch on beginning of row. Turn. (28 stitches)
 
Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into each stitch to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (28dc)

Rpt the last row three more times. Fasten off.

If you prefer a tighter cuff, use 3.50mm hook.

Button – Buttonhole Bands – Using main colour yarn, starting  at lower edge with RS facing and working into row ends, work 39dc evenly along up first front edge to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each tr around neck, 3dc into corner, work 39dc evenly along into row ends down second  front edge. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to neck edge. Turn.

Rpt last row from neck down to corner. Fasten off.

Buttonholes – With WS facing return to neck edge on first side, working from neck edge downwards, work 1dc into first dc, * make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 7dc, * rpt from * to * once, make 2ch, miss 1dc, work 1dc into each of remaining dc to end. Turn. (3 buttonholes)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 1dc into each dc and 2ch space to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off loose ends of yarn, close small gaps underarms.

Turn through to RS. Sew 3 buttons on yoke to correspond with buttonholes.

5th Row – as 3rd Row.
