Crochet Puff Stitch Cardigan

I have designed this crochet puff stitch cardigan to fit a 12 to 18 month baby. Give as a lovely gift for a family member or a friends baby, make for birthday’s, Christmas etc.

Made in worsted weight #3 yarn on a 4.50mm hook, this pattern is easy and quick to crochet.

yo, pull up loop from next st, (twice) yo pull through 4 loops, yo pull through 2 loops.

dc2tog Decrease.   Leaving last loop of each dc on hook, work 1dc in each of next 2dc, yo, pull through all loops.

ps Decrease.  yo, pull up loop from next st, yo, pull up loop from next st, yo pull through 4 loops, yo pull through 2 loops.

Dec 1sc.  Pull up loop from next 2st, yo, pull though all loops.

fpdc.    Work dc around front post of the dc on row below
bpdc.   Work dc around back post of the dc on row below

Base of ch. Work in first stitch

ch3 counts as first dc

Size to fit approx – 20 Inch chest, 12 – 18 month baby
Finished length from shoulder approx 11.5 Inches
Sleeve length: From under arm to cuff approx 7 Inches

Materials
I have used:-
40 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in color 1
40 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in color 2
80 grams of Paintbox Simple DK in color 3

OR an equivalent yarn would be:-
1.45oz of Worsted Weight #3 in color 1
1.45oz of Worsted Weight #3 in color 2
2.85oz of Worsted Weight #3 in color 3
5 medium size buttons

5.00mm & 4.50mm Clover Crochet Hook

GAUGE – 4dc & 2 rows measures approx 1 inch

Back – Starting with rib, using color 1 and 4.50mm hook ch44, 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (41dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch3, * 1fpdc around next dc, 1bpdc around next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of turning ch. Turn. (see abbrev for fpdc & bpdc)

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

Pattern Row 1 – Join in color 2, (RS) ch3, 1dc in each st to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn.

Pattern Row 2 – Join in color 3, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to end, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn. (42sc)

Pattern Row 3 – ch3, 1ps (see abbrev) in each sc to last sc, 1dc in sc. Turn. (40ps, 1dc + ch3)

Pattern Row 4 – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each ps to end, 1sc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn. (42sc)

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 six more times.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once.

You should have 29 rows worked from the rib or your work measures approx 11.5 inches from beginning. Fasten off.

First Front – # (Rib) With 4.50mm hook and color 1

ch22, work 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (19dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch3, * 1fpdc around next dc, 1bpdc around next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of turning ch. Turn.

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 1 to 4 from back four more times.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. (19dc + ch3)

21 rows have been worked in all from rib. Fasten off. Turn. #

Shape Neck – Skip 5dc, join in color 3 to next dc, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to end, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn. (15sc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) ch3, 1ps in each of the next 11sc, dec 1ps (see abbrev) over next 2sc, 1dc in last sc. Turn. (12ps, 1dc + ch3)

Next Row – (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in the base of ch1, dec 1sc (see abbrev) over next 2ps, 1sc in each ps to end, 1sc in top of ch3.
Fasten off. Turn. (13sc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) Join in color 2 ch3, 1dc in each of next 9sc, dc2tog (see abbrev) over next 2sc, 1dc in last sc. Turn. (11dc + ch3)

Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 2 to 4 once.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. Fasten off.

Second Front – Rpt from # to # on first front.

Shape Neck – Join in color 3, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 14dc turn leaving 4dc & ch3 un-worked. Turn.

Next Row – (Dec) ch3, dec 1ps over next 2st, 1ps in each of next 11sc, 1dc in last sc. Turn. (12ps, 1dc + ch3)

Next Row – (Dec Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of next 10st, dec 1sc over next 2st, 1sc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn. (13sc)

Next Row – (Dec Row) Join in color 2 ch3, dc2tog over next 2sc, 1dc in each of next 10sc. Turn. (11dc + ch3)

Fasten off.

Rpt Pattern Rows 2 to 4 once.

Rpt Pattern Row 1 once. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – (Rib) With 4.50mm hook and color 1

ch30, work 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (27dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch3 * 1fpdc around next dc, 1bpdc around next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (27dc + ch3).

Rpt last row twice more. Fasten off.

1st Pattern Row – (Inc Row) Join in color 2, ch3, 1dc in base of ch3, 1dc in each st to end, 2dc in last st. Fasten off. Turn. (29dc + ch3)

2nd Pattern Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each dc to end, 1sc in top of ch3. (30sc)

3rd Pattern Row – (Inc Row) ch3, 1ps in base of ch3, 1ps in each sc to last sc, (1ps, 1dc) in sc. Turn. (30ps, 1dc + ch3)

4th Pattern Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each ps to end, 1sc in top of ch3.

Rpt 1st to 4th Pattern Rows increasing in the same way on the beginning and end of alternate rows until 42st remain.

Continue in pattern as set without further shaping until sleeve seam measures approx 7 inches from beginning, ending on a 4th Pattern Row. Fasten off.

Join shoulder seams.

Right and Left Front Borders
With RS facing and 5.00mm hook, join color 1 to lower edge of right front edge, ch1, work 40sc evenly in row ends up front edge to neck, 3sc in corner, work 14sc evenly along first neck edge to shoulder, 1sc in each of next 18sc across back, 14sc evenly along second neck edge, 3sc in corner, work 40sc evenly in row ends down second front edge. Turn.

Starting with ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, work 1 more row in sc all around cardigan working 3sc in corners. Turn.

Next Row – # ch3, 1dc in each sc to corner. Turn.

Next Row – ch3, * 1fpdc around next dc, 1bpdc around next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off. #

With RS facing and working from neck downwards, return to opposite front and rpt from # to # Fasten off.

Finishing – Fold the sleeves in half length ways, place the centre to shoulder seams and sew in position, sew up side and sleeve seams. (see pic)

Turn through to the RS, sew in and tie off loose ends of yarn.

Sew on buttons evenly down side for boy or girl and use gaps in dc’s as buttonholes.
