Crochet Baby Placket Sweater – A simple sweater made from the top down with a three button placket.

Crochet it for a little one as a gift to wear on cooler days.

Made in stripes using a main and contrast colour.

I have used 3 novelty train, boats and bear buttons and adorned with a bumble bee, monkey face and tiger motif, but you can crochet one from my selection of appliques if you wish.

4.00mm crochet hook, 3 medium novelty buttons

Yoke – Using colour 1, make 57ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into the next 6ch, (front) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into next 8ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 19ch, (back) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch. (front) Fasten off. Turn. (62tr + 3ch)

Join in colour 2 

2nd Row – (Inc Row) Make 3ch, * 1tr into each tr to 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr on 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr on 3tr group, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (70tr + 3ch)

3rd Row – Rpt Row 2. Fasten off. (78tr + 3ch) 

4th to 11th Rows – Starting with colour 1, rpt 2nd Row, (changing colour every 2 rows, ending with colour 2 on 11th Row) Fasten off. Turn. (142tr + 3ch)

12th Row (shape armholes) – Join in colour 1, make 3ch, 1tr into each tr to 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 2tr into centre tr on 3tr group, miss 30tr, 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each tr to 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 2tr into centre tr on 3tr group, miss 30tr, 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (86tr + 3ch)

Starting with colour 2 rpt last row changing colour every 2 rows until 23 rows have been worked in all from beginning. Fasten off.

Join in colour 1, make 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Rib Row – 3ch, * fptr around next tr, bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row.

Rpt Rib Row twice more. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – With WS facing, re-join colour 1 to side of tr underarm, 3ch, 1tr into each of next 30tr, 1tr into side of tr on opposite side of armhole, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (31tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.

Starting with colour 2 rpt last row changing colour every 2 rows until 13 rows have been worked in all from beginning. Fasten off.

Join in colour 1, make 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Rib Row – 3ch, * fptr around next tr, bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr, fptr around tr, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row.

Starting with bptr, rpt Rib Row once more. Fasten off.

Button/Buttonhole Bands – With RS facing, join colour 1 to lower edge on front split, make 1ch, 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, work 23 more dc evenly along first front edge to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each ch around neck to next corner, 3dc into corner, work 24dc evenly along second front edge to end. Turn.

Buttonhole Row – 1ch, 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 3dc, * make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into each of next 9dc, * rpt from * to * once, make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into last dc. Turn.

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, work 1dc into each 2ch space and dc to end. Fasten off.

Return to second side and with WS facing working from neck downwards, join colour 1 with a ss, 1ch, 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into stitch at base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end. Fasten off.

Collar – With WS facing, missing the button/buttonhole bands on either side of neck opening and working into back loop of the stitch only, join colour 1 to next dc, 3ch, * 2tr into next dc, 1tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to end. Turn. (81tr + 3ch)

Rib Row – 3ch, * fptr around next tr, bptr around next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt Rib Row until 6 Rows have been worked for collar. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in all loose ends of yarn and trim, attach 3 buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
