Cluster block baby sweater, this cute free crochet pattern can be made in 4 sizes just by changing hooks.

The design is written for beginner and intermediate crocheters using the cluster block stitch.

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, I have used approximately:-

100 grams of Stylecraft Special DK yarn in colour 1
100 grams of Stylecraft Special DK yarn in colour 2

4.00mm & 5.00mm crochet hooks, 2 small buttons

You can for a:-
Newborn baby use a 3.50mm & 4.50mm hooks
3-6 month use a 4.50mm & 5.50mm hooks
6-12 month use a 5.00mm & 6.00mm hooks

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Sweater Back

# Rib – With 4.00mm hook and colour 1 make 7ch, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (6dc)

Working into BLO, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Rpt last row until 39 rows have been worked from beginning.

Turn your work so you are working into the row ends of ribbing.

Body – Carry both coloured yarns with you across each row by crocheting over them, with 5.00mm hook and colour 2, make 3ch, (RS) work 1tr into each row end to end. Turn. (38tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – Using colour 1, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * make 1ch, miss 1tr, 1dc into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr and 3tch, make 1ch, miss 1tr, work 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (20dc + 19, 1ch spaces)

3rd Row – With colour 2 make 3ch, work tr3tog into next 1ch space, * make 1ch, miss 1dc, tr3tog into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, work 1tr into dc. Turn. (18tr3tog, 1tr + 3ch)

4th Row – With colour 1, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * make 1ch, miss tr3tog, 1dc into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last tr3tog and 3tch, make 1ch, miss tr3tog, work 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn.

Shoulder Button Band – Continue with colour 2, make 1ch, work 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into next tr3tog, * 1dc into next 1ch space, 1dc into next tr3tog,* rpt from * to * three more times. Turn. (10dc)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Rpt last row twice. Fasten off.

Sweater Front – Rpt from # to # on back of sweater.

Rpt 4th & 5th Rows six more times or until back measures approx 7.5 inches from bottom (including the rib), alternating colours as set.

Shape Neck (side 1) – With colour 1, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * make 1ch, miss 1tr3tog, 1dc into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * five more times. Turn. (7dc, 6, 1ch spaces)

Second Row – With colour 2 make 3ch, work tr3tog into next 1ch space, * make 1ch, miss 1dc, tr3tog into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, work 1tr into dc. Turn. (6 tr3tog, 1tr + 3ch)

Sleeves x 2

Rib – With 4.00mm hook and colour 1 make 7ch, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn. (6dc)

Working into BLO, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn.

Rpt last row until 25 rows have been worked from beginning.

Upper Part – With 5.00mm hook and colour 2, make 3ch, (RS) work 1tr into the stitch at the base of the 3ch, 1tr into each row end to last row end work 2tr into row end. Turn. (26tr + 3ch)

Row 2 – With colour 1, work 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * make 1ch, miss 1tr, 1dc into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr and 3tch, make 1ch, miss 1tr, work 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (14dc, 13, 1ch spaces)

Row 3 – With colour 2 make 3ch, work 1tr into the stitch at the base of the 3ch, tr3tog into next 1ch space, * make 1ch, tr3tog into next 1ch space, * rpt from * to * to last dc, work 2tr into dc. Turn. (13, tr3tog, 3tr + 3ch)

Rpt 4th & 5th Rows from sweater back three more times or until sleeve measures approx 5 inches from bottom (including the rib), alternating colours as set. Fasten off. (15, tr3tog, 1tr + 3ch)

With WS facing join left shoulder together by whip stitching front to back. (join here on pic)

Neck Edge – With RS facing using 4.00mm hook work approx 52dc evenly around front and back neck edge including into row ends on the side of the button band. Turn.

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Fold sleeves in half, place centre to shoulder seams and whip stitch into position, whip stitch the side and sleeve seams together, (see pic) weave in and trim off loose ends of yarn.

Turn through to RS. Sew on buttons to button band, use gaps between tr3tog’s for buttonholes.

With WS facing join left shoulder together by whip stitching front to back. (join here on pic)

Neck Edge – With RS facing using 4.00mm hook work approx 52sc evenly around front and back neck edge including in row ends on the side of the button band. Turn.

Starting with ch1, 1sc in the stitch at the base of the ch1, work 1sc in each sc to end. Fasten off.
