Crochet short baby jacket-pants, if you are looking for a sweater and pants for your little one, this set will be ideal, my easy free crochet pattern is all you need. Both the short jacket and pants are made from the top down with a pretty one row repeat shell group stitch.

A great pattern for beginners or intermediate crocheters that are looking for a project that doesn’t require any sewing together.

The free crochet baby pattern has been written using a light worsted #3 (double knitting for UK) yarn. Whether you are making it for a gift or for your own baby, this trendy little design will be loved by everyone.

Best Yarn

It is always best to use the recommended yarn in the pattern materials section.

I have used Stylecraft Special double knitting in two colours for the crochet short baby jacket-pants outfit, this can be substituted with a light worsted #3 yarn.

Pattern asks for a 4.00mm crochet hook, but you can if you want use a larger or smaller hook to change the size of the little outfit.

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, you will need approximately:-

50 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in colour 1
60 grams of Stylecraft Special DK in colour 2

4.00mm crochet hook

TENSION – 5tr and 2.5 rows measures approx 1 Inch

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Pants – With colour 1, make 78ch loosely, ss to first ch to make a ring, (RS) work 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each ch to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. (78dc)

Row 2 and 3 – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 4 – Join in colour 2, make 3ch, 2tr into base of 3ch, * miss 2dc, 3tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 2dc, miss last 2dc, ss to top of 3ch. Turn. (26 groups)

Pattern Row – ss to centre tr of 3tr group, make 3ch, 2tr into same tr, * miss 2tr, 3tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Row 8 more times until 13 rows have been worked or work measures approx 5.5 inches from beginning. Turn.

Divide for Legs

First Leg – Work Pattern Row across the next 13 groups, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row to make a round. (13 groups) Turn leaving remaining 13 groups un-worked (will come back too for second leg)

Rpt Pattern Row twice more. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (39dc)

Join in colour 1 and work last row three more times. Fasten off.

Second Leg – Return to un-worked groups at division, rejoin colour 2 to centre tr on first 3tr group, continue second leg same as first. (13 groups)

Return to waist and working along cast on edge with WS facing, Rejoin colour 1 with a ss, make 3ch, 1tr into each ch to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (77tr + 3ch)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Chain Tie – With colour 2 make 130ch. Fasten off.

Finishing – Close small gap on crotch, weave in all loose ends of yarn, thread chain tie through alternate tr’s on waist, attach decorative button to each end.

Jacket – Worked in one piece, starting with yoke, using colour 2 make 55ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into the next 6ch’s (Front), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into next 8ch’s (shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 17ch’s (Back), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch’s. (shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch’s (Front). Turn. (60tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – (Inc Row) 3ch, * 1tr into each tr to next 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, 1tr into each tr to end, work 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (68tr + 3ch)

3rd to 8th Row – rpt 2nd Row. Turn. (116tr + 3ch)

9th Row – (Divide for Armholes) – Make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 15tr, 2dc into next tr, miss next 24tr, (armhole) 2dc into next tr, 1dc into each of next 16tr, 2dc into next tr, 1dc into each of next 16tr, 2dc into next tr, miss next 24tr, (armhole) 2dc into next tr, 1dc into each of next 15tr, 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (74dc)

how to shape a square neck armhole

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 1dc into each dc to end. Fasten off. Turn.

Next Row – Join in colour 1, make 3ch, miss 1dc, 3tr into next dc, * miss 2dc, 3tr into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 2dc, miss 1dc, 1tr into last dc. Turn. (24 groups)

Next Row – Make 3ch, miss 1tr, * 3tr into next tr, miss 2tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt last row once. Fasten off.

Front Border – Working on WS, rejoin colour 1 to bottom of left hand side of front edge, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 22 more dc evenly into row ends to neck edge, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each of the starting ch around neck, 3dc into corner, 23dc evenly into row ends down second front edge. Turn.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc up first front, around neck and down second front to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in any loose ends of yarn.

Pattern Row – sl st to centre dc of 3dc group, ch3, 2dc in same dc, * skip 2dc, 3dc in next dc, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to top of ch3. Turn.

Rpt Pattern Row 8 more times until 13 rows have been worked or work measures approx 5.5 inches from beginning. Turn.

Divide for Legs
First Leg – Work Pattern Row across the next 13 groups, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row to make a round. (13 groups) Turn leaving remaining 13 groups un-worked (will come back too for second leg)

Starting with ch1, 1sc in stitch at the base of the ch1, work 1sc in each dc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off.

Chain Tie – With color 2 ch130. Fasten off.

Finishing – Close small gap on crotch, weave in all loose ends of yarn, thread chain tie through alternate dc’s on waist, attach decorative button to each end.

2nd Row – (Inc Row) ch3, * 1dc in each dc to next 3dc group, 1dc in next dc, 3dc in centre dc of 3dc group, * rpt from * to * to last 3dc group, 1dc in next dc, 3dc in centre dc of 3dc group, 1dc in each dc to end, work 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (68dc + ch3)

3rd to 8th Row – rpt 2nd Row. Turn. (116dc + ch3)

9th Row – (Divide for Armholes) – ch1, 1sc in stitch at the base of the ch1, 1sc in each of next 15dc, 2sc in next dc, skip next 24dc, (armhole) 2sc in next dc, 1sc in each of next 16dc, 2sc in next dc, 1sc in each of next 16dc, 2sc in next dc, skip next 24dc, (armhole) 2sc in next dc, 1sc in each of next 15dc, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn. (74sc)

Starting with ch1, 1sc in stitch at the base of the ch1, work 1sc in each sc to end. Fasten off. Turn.

Next Row – Join in color 1, ch3, skip 1sc, 3dc in next sc, * skip 2sc, 3dc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last 2sc, skip 1sc, 1dc in last sc. Turn. (24 groups)

Next Row – ch3, skip 1dc, * 3dc in next dc, skip 2dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn.

Rpt last row once. Fasten off.

Front Border – Working on WS, rejoin color 1 to bottom of left hand side of front edge, ch1, 1sc in stitch at the base of the ch1, work 22 more sc evenly in row ends to neck edge, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each of the starting ch around neck, 3sc in corner, 23sc evenly in row ends down second front edge.
