Any thickness of yarn and hook size can be used for this stitch, but the thicker the yarn and larger the hook you work with will make the puffs stand out more, I have used for the picture swatch samples a worsted weight #4 yarn (Aran for UK users) and a 5.00mm crochet hook size.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Abbreviations UK
RS. Right Side
ch. Chain
dc. Double Crochet
yrh. Yarn Round Hook
tch. Turning Chain

PS. Puff Stitch
yrh insert hook into next stitch and pull up loop, (3 loops on hook)
Repeat step 1 (5 loops on hook)
yrh pull through the first 4 loops on your hook (2 loops on hook)
yrh pull through last 2 loops on your hook.

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Made in multiples of 2 + 1.

I have made 25ch for the swatch, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end. Turn.

2nd Row – 1ch, (RS) work ps (see in abbrev & pics below) into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work ps into each dc to end. Turn.

3rd Row – 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, 1dc into each ps to end. Turn.

Rpt 2nd & 3rd Rows until length required.
