Easy Peasy Baby Cardigan – This sweet design is suitable for the beginner crocheter as well as the more experienced. You will love the quickness and ease of this long sleeve free crochet pattern.

There is no need for any sewing up as it is worked in one piece from the neck down. Make with or without the collar, once started you will have it finished in just a few hours.

It’s made in a variegated (random for UK) yarn to give it some style with double and single crochet stitches. This pattern is great for a gift you want to make in hurry.

For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn, I have used approximately:-
110 grams of James C Brett Marble DK

4.00mm crochet hook, 3 decorative buttons

TENSION – 4tr & 2.5 rows measures approx 1 inch

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Worked in one piece starting with yoke.

Make 58ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into the next 6ch’s (Front), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into next 9ch’s (Shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 18ch’s (Back), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 9ch’s. (Shoulder), 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch’s (Front). Turn. (63tr + 3ch)

2nd Row – (Inc Row) Make 3ch, * 1tr into each tr to next 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (71tr + 3ch)

3rd to 8th Row – rpt 2nd Row. Turn. (119tr + 3ch)

9th Row – (Divide for Armholes) – Make 3ch, 1tr into next 15tr, work * 2tr into next tr, make 1ch, miss next 25tr, 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of next 34tr, work 2tr into next tr, make 1ch, miss next 25tr, 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch, Turn. (73tr, 2, 1ch spaces + 3ch)

10th Row – 3ch, 1tr into each tr to first 1ch space, 2tr into 1ch space, 1tr into each tr to second 1ch space, 2tr into 1ch space, 1tr into each tr to end. Turn. (77tr + 3ch)

11th Row – 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt 11th Row until 21 rows have been worked from beginning or work measures approx 10 Inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – Join yarn to side of tr underarm, make 3ch, 1tr into each of next 25tr, 1tr into side of tr on opposite side of sleeve, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (26tr + 3ch)

Next Row – 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt last row until 9 rows have been worked in all from yoke. Turn.

Cuff – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc. Turn.

Decrease Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 2dc, * dec 1dc (see abbrev) over next 2dc, 1dc into each of next 3dc, * rpt from * to * to last 4dc, dec 1dc over next 2dc, 1dc into each dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. (22dc)

Starting with 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, work 2 rows of 1dc into each dc, turning and ss to first dc on the end of each row. Turn.

Button/Buttonhole Bands
Written for a girl, swap buttonhole row to opposite side for a boy.

With WS facing and starting at neck edge on right hand front, work 42dc evenly into row ends down first front edge, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each tr along bottom of cardigan, 3dc into corner, work 42dc evenly into row ends up second front edge to neck. Turn.

Buttonhole Row 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc down front edge, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc along bottom of cardigan, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each of next 26dc, * make 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into next 7dc, * rpt from * to * once more, 2ch, miss 1dc, 1dc into last dc. Turn. (3 Buttonholes)

Next row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each 2ch space and dc down front edge to corner. Fasten off.

With WS facing join yarn to bottom edge on left hand side, working from lower edge up, work 1dc into each dc to corner. Fasten off.

Collar – (Optional) Rejoin yarn to first ch after buttonhole band on WR side of work, make 3ch, 1tr into each of next 7ch, 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 9ch, 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 18ch, 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each of next 9ch, 3tr into next ch, 1tr into each ch to end. Finishing – Close small gap underarms, weave in and trim off any loose ends of yarn, sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Fold back collar.

My pleasure Sabine, to make the cardigan larger you can use a bigger crochet hook than the pattern asks for.
