Two easy formats have been used to write this free crochet baby cardigan pattern for UK crocheters and USA crafters.

Best Yarn

For great results from this free crochet baby cardigan pattern it is always best to use the recommended yarn in the pattern materials section.

I have used King Cole Big Value Baby DK in cream, lilac and light blue for the samples of the baby cardigans, but there there are many colours available in this yarn to choose from.

Pattern asks for a 4.00mm crochet hook, change hook sizes higher or lower to make the baby cardigan bigger or smaller, you can also change the thickness of yarn if you wish.

UK INSTRUCTIONS:

Worked in one piece starting with yoke.

With colour 1, make 55ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr into the next 6ch, (front) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into next 8ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 17ch, (back) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch, (shoulder) 3tr into next ch, 1tr into the next 8ch, (front). Turn. (60tr +3ch)

2nd Row – (Inc Row) Make 3ch, * 1tr into each tr to next 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, 1tr into next tr, 3tr into centre tr of 3tr group, 1tr into each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (68tr + 3ch)

3rd & 4th Rows – rpt 2nd Row. (84tr + 3ch)

5th Row – Rpt 2nd Row working into the BLO of stitch. (92tr + 3ch)

6th to 8th Rows – Working through both loops from now on rpt 2nd Row. (116tr + 3ch)

9th Row (Increase and divide for armholes) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to centre tr of first 3tr group, work 2tr into tr, miss next 24tr (armhole), 1tr into centre tr of next 3tr group, rpt from * to * to 3tr group, work 2tr into next tr, 1tr into centre tr of 3tr group, miss next 24tr (armhole), rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch, Turn. Commence Body – Join colour 2 to the same stitch where you just fastened off, make 1ch, work (1dc, 2tr) into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * miss 2tr, work (1dc, 2tr) into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr and 3ch, miss tr, work 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (34 Groups)

Second Row – 1ch, (1dc, 2tr) into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * miss 2tr, (1dc, 2tr) into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and dc, miss 2tr, work 1dc into dc. Turn.

Rpt last row until 18 rows have been worked or your work measures approx 9.5 inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

Sleeve’s x 2 – With RS facing join colour 1 to side of tr at armhole, make 3ch, work 1tr into side of tr, 1tr into each tr to end, 2tr into side of tr on opposite side of sleeve, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn (27tr + 3ch)

Starting with 3ch, work 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Repeat last row until 10 rows have been worked in all from yoke. Turn. Fasten off. 

Cuff – 1ch, (1dc, 2tr) into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, * miss 2tr, (1dc, 2tr) into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr, miss 2tr, work 1dc into last tr, ss to first dc on beginning of row to make a round. Turn. (9 Groups)

Row Two – 1ch, (1dc, 2tr) into next dc, * miss 2tr, (1dc, 2tr) into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 2tr and dc, miss 2tr, work 1dc into dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt Row Two until 5 rows have been worked in all. Fasten off.

Yoke edge – Starting on left side with neck edge facing upwards, work into loose loops on the yoke, (created on 5th Row when working into BLO) join in colour 2, work one row of crab stitch (see abbrev) to end.  

Buttonhole Band – With colour 2 and WS facing, start at neck edge on right hand side, work dc evenly into row ends down first front to corner, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each stitch along bottom of cardigan, 3dc into corner, work dc evenly into row ends up to next corner. Turn.

Row 2 – 1ch, 1dc into stitch at the base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc down first front, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each dc along bottom of cardigan, 3dc into corner, 1dc into each of next 2dc, * make 2ch, miss 2dc, 1dc into each of next 6dc, * rpt from * to * three more times, make 2ch, miss 2dc, 1dc into last dc. Turn. (5 buttonholes made)

Working 3dc into corners and starting with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 1dc into each dc and 2dc into each 2ch space around cardigan to end. Fasten off.

With RS facing and starting from neck downwards on right hand side of cardigan, work one row of crab stitch, down first front, along the bottom and up the second front. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn, attach buttons to correspond with buttonholes, fold back cuffs onto sleeves.

Working 3sc in corners and starting with ch1, 1sc in the stitch at the base of the ch1, work 1sc in each sc and 2sc in each ch2 space around cardigan to end. Fasten off.
