For great results from this free crochet baby pattern it is always best to use the recommended yarn in the pattern materials section.

I have used King Cole Big Value Baby DK in white for colour 1 and Stylecraft Special DK in citron for colour 2 for the crochet matinee baby outfit, but there are many other shades to choose in both yarns.

Join in colour 2 with a ss into first stitch, * 3tr into next vst, ss into space between next two vst, * rpt from * to * to end, ss into top of 3ch. Fasten off.

Bloomers – With colour 2, make 89ch loosely, ss to first ch to form a round, make 3ch, work 1tr into the stitch at the base of the 3ch * miss 3ch, work shell into next ch, * rpt from * to * to last 4ch, miss 3ch, work (2tr, 1ch) into last ch, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (22, shell groups)

Row 1 – ss to first 1ch space, make 5ch, 1tr into same space, work vst into each shell to end, ss to 3rd of 5ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Row 2 – ss to first ch space, make 3ch, work (1tr, 1ch, 2tr) into same space, work shell into each vst to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Rpt Rows 1 & 2 until work measures approx 5 inches. Turn.

Divide for legs – 3ch, work Row 1 over next 11 shells, miss 11 shells, ss to 3rd of 5ch on beginning of row. Turn. (11vst)

Continue on these st’s in pattern as set for right leg until work measures approx 9 inches from waist Turn.

Work Row 1 once. Turn. Fasten off.

Change to colour 1.

Join in colour 2 with a ss into first stitch, * 3tr into next vst, ss into space between next two vst, * rpt from * to * to end, ss to first ss. Fasten off.

Left Leg – With WS facing Join colour 2 to first un-worked shell at division for legs, make 5ch, work 1tr into same space, work Row 1 over next 11 shells, ss to 3rd of 5ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Continue on these remaining st’s and work the same as for right leg. Fasten off.

With colour 2 and WS facing, start with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 67dc evenly along cast on edge at waist. Turn. Fasten off.

Join in colour 1, starting with 1ch, 1dc into the stitch at the base of the 1ch, work 2 more rows of 1dc into each dc to end, ss to first dc on beginning of each row. Fasten off.

Chain Tie – With colour 1 make 120ch, ss into 2nd ch from hook, ss into each ch to end. Fasten off.

Bonnet – Make 59ch, (RS) work shell into 5ch from hook, * miss 3ch, shell into next ch, * rpt from * to * to last 2ch, miss 1ch, 1tr into last ch. Turn. (14 shell groups)

Next row – 3ch, work vst into each shell to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Next row – 3ch, work shell into each vst to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

Rpt the last 2 rows twice more until you have 4 shell rows worked in all from beginning. Fasten off.

Back Frill – With RS facing return to the 3ch at beginning of the last row worked and join in colour 2, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, working into front loop of stitch only, work * 5tr into 1ch of shell, 1dc in space between this shell and next shell * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc into last tr,  Fasten off. Turn.

Back Panel – With WS facing and working on the row below last row of 5tr groups, miss 5 shells, join colour 1 between last and next shell, 3ch, vst into 1ch space of next 4 shells, 1tr between next 2 shells. Turn. (see pic below)

Starting with 3ch, work shell into each vst to end, 1tr into top of 3ch.

Continue on these st’s, working vst row and then shell row until back panel fits along the side edges.  Fasten off.

With WS facing join colour 1 to starting chain edge, work 45dc evenly along ch edge. Turn.

Working through BLO work 1 row of 1dc into each to end. Turn.

Working through both loops from now on work 3 more rows of 1dc into each dc, turning at the end of each row. Fasten off.

Front Frill – With front of bonnet nearest to you and RS facing join colour 2 to front loose loops (created when you worked into BLO), 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1dc, 5tr, into next dc, miss 1dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * to end. Fasten off. (11, 5tr groups)

Joining Back Seams – Pushing back frill out of the way and on to the front of the hat, with WS facing join back seams.

Ties & Neck Edge

Make 60ch. Fasten off (will come back to later)

Make 61ch, ss into 2nd ch from hook, ss into each ch to end, with RS and back panel facing, join the chain tie to neck edge (see pic 1), work 44tr evenly along neck edge (pic 2), pick up 60ch made earlier, join chain tie to hat with a ss (pic 3), continue ss into each ch to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn on coat, pants and bonnet. Thread chain tie through shells on waist of pants and tie in a bow. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes on coat.

Continue on these st’s in pattern as set for right leg until work measures approx 9 inches from waist Turn.

Work Row 1 once. Turn. Fasten off.

Change to color 1.

Join in color 2 with a sl st in first stitch, * 3dc in next vst, sl st in space between next two vst, * rpt from * to * to end, sl st to first sl st. Fasten off.

Left Leg – With WS facing Join color 2 to first un-worked shell at division for legs, ch5, work 1dc in same space, work Row 1 over next 11 shells, sl st to 3rd of 5ch on beginning of row. Turn.

Continue on these remaining st’s and work the same as for right leg. Fasten off.

With color 2 and WS facing, start with ch1, 1sc in the stitch at the base of the ch1, work 67sc evenly along cast on edge at waist. Turn. Fasten off.

Working through both loops from now on work 3 more rows of 1sc in each sc, turning at the end of each row. Fasten off.

Front Frill – With front of bonnet nearest to you and RS facing join color 2 to front loose loops (created when you worked in BLO), ch1, 1sc in the stitch at the base of the ch1, * skip 1sc, 5dc, in next sc, skip 1sc, 1sc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to end. Fasten off. (11, 5dc groups)

Joining Back Seams – Pushing back frill out of the way and on to the front of the hat, with WS facing join back seams.

Ties & Neck Edge

ch60. Fasten off (will come back to later)

ch61, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch to end, with RS and back panel facing, join the chain tie to neck edge (see pic 1) work 44dc evenly along neck edge (pic 2), pick up 60ch made earlier, join chain tie to hat with a sl st, (pic 3), continue sl st in each ch to end. Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off all loose ends of yarn on coat, pants and bonnet. Thread chain tie through shells on waist of pants and tie in a bow. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes on coat.
